Vail, CO Summer
Vail, Colorado - a world renowned ski area, the largest in the state of Colorado. Skiier’s from around the globe trek here to enjoy legendary back bowls and unmatched terrain. Sure, it’s a winter paradise, but what about the summer? Even better!
Summertime in the Vail Valley provides a ton of outdoor recreation opportunities, making it a true dream. No matter what you like, there must be something for you here. In this post, I’ll go over some of the best the valley has to offer.
Mountain Biking
Boasting 343 miles of mountain biking trails, the rides are seemingly endless. Whether you like to pedal cross-country style, or send downhills jumps, there is something for everyone. Each town in Eagle county has a trail system worthy of checking out. Vail Resort offers lift serviced trails and primarily downhill riding. If you want a mix of up and down, head down valley to the town of Eagle or Avon. The Boneyard is a personal favorite. If you don’t have a bike, not a problem, rentals in the valley are readily available. Check out Venture Sports for rental info. To find the trail thats best for you, visit MTB Project.
Hiking
Being surrounded by National Forest Service land, there are plenty of trails for hoofing it on your own two feet as well. I’m sure you won’t be able to cover the 294 miles of trail on one visit, but it doesn’t hurt to try. For easy access, ride up the Eagle Bahn Gondola to find multiple trails. Remember, the weather changes quickly in the mountains, so don’t forger layers, rain gear, snack, and water! Check out Hiking Project for some inspiration.
Fly Fishing
The Eagle River, Gore Creek, and the Colorado River make this area a world class fishing destination. Either by raft or by foot, you can find Rainbows, Cutthroat, Brown, and Brook Trout. If you have never done any fly-fishing, your experience will be much more pleasant if you take a guide. Find a guided trip here.
Rafting
From mild to wild, the rivers in the area also provide whitewater fun. The Eagle and Colorado rivers are the closest rafting to Vail, with multiple trips of a range of difficulties running each day. Book for your group today with Timberline Tours. In my opinion, some of the best commercially rafted water in the country is only about an 1.5 hour drive away. Take a day trip to Buena Vista, CO and experience the beautiful and secluded Browns Canyon National Monument by raft. There are plenty of opportunities to get on the water each day with Browns Canyon Rafting.
Road Biking
Pedal on pavement for miles with our bike path that stretches from Breckenridge all the way to Glenwood Springs and beyond.
Horseback Riding
Enjoy a true western experience and travel the trails by horseback. Vail Stables even offers roping class, so you can make all of your rodeo dreams come true.
Parks
With a few good parks around, you can enjoy a picnic, let the little ones play, or hang out on the beach. Nottingham Park in Avon offers a great beach beside the lake where you can take a dip or even rent a Stand Up Paddle Board for the day. Ford Park and Donovan Park are other good options. Nottingham and Ford also occasionally have live music.
Golf
With 16 golf courses nearby, theres no shortage of holes to fill your time while here in Eagle county.
