What the drive actually looks like
I-70 west from the airport, through the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel at just over 11,000 feet, down past Copper Mountain, over Vail Pass at more than 10,600 feet, through Vail and down the valley along the Eagle River. You exit at Avon and climb Village Road up to Beaver Creek.
That final climb matters more than the mileage suggests. It is steep, it is often snow packed in winter, and it is the part of the trip where an all wheel drive vehicle stops being a nice idea.
Getting into Beaver Creek Village
Beaver Creek Village is a private, gated resort community with a security checkpoint at the entrance. Guests arriving in a rental car for the first time often find this the confusing part of the trip, particularly at night in weather with a car full of luggage. The village core itself is largely pedestrian, so knowing where you can actually pull up to unload is half the job.

Denver is two and a half to three hours away but has far more flights, more airlines and usually lower fares, and in shoulder season or bad weather it is often the more reliable option. Many guests fly into Denver deliberately and treat the drive as part of the trip.
Winter driving and the Colorado Traction Law
CDOT activates the Passenger Vehicle Traction Law on I-70 through here whenever conditions call for it, typically September through May. All wheel or four wheel drive with at least 3/16 inch of tread, or chains. A 100 dollar fine for non compliance, 500 if your vehicle contributes to a closure.
