Eagle County Regional Airport sits in Gypsum, about 88 miles south of Steamboat Springs. On clear roads the drive runs right around two hours. We take I-70 west to Wolcott, then turn north on Colorado 131 and follow the valley up through State Bridge, Bond, McCoy, Toponas, Yampa and Oak Creek before joining US 40 a few miles east of town.
Why arriving through Eagle can beat arriving through Denver
Colorado 131 is a valley road, which means you never cross Rabbit Ears Pass. Guests who fly into Denver do cross it, and it is the single most weather sensitive stretch of the entire Steamboat approach. Coming up from Eagle trades a shorter drive and a calmer road for a slightly smaller airport. In January and February that trade is usually worth making.

The 131 corridor is one of the better drives in the state once the snow is gone. It tracks the Colorado River past State Bridge, climbs through ranch country and drops into the Yampa Valley.
