What the drive actually looks like
I-70 west out of Denver, climbing steadily through Idaho Springs and Georgetown, then through the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel at just over 11,000 feet. You come down into the Dillon Reservoir basin, take the Frisco exit, and run south on Highway 9 along the water into Breckenridge.
When the tunnel closes, the alternate is Loveland Pass, an exposed switchback road over the Continental Divide. It adds time and it is not a road to meet for the first time in a rental car in a storm.
About the altitude
You go from 5,400 feet at the airport to 9,600 feet in about two hours. That is a fast gain and it is why so many visitors feel rough on night one. The standard advice is to drink more water than feels necessary, go easy on alcohol the first evening, and not plan a hard first day on the mountain.

Timing, and the Friday problem
Two and a half hours on a clear weekday. Westbound I-70 on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings in ski season is the worst traffic in Colorado, and the Eisenhower Tunnel is the pinch point. Add an hour or more. Sunday afternoons eastbound are the same story in reverse if you are heading back to the airport, which is worth remembering when you pick your return flight.
Winter driving and the Colorado Traction Law
CDOT can activate the Passenger Vehicle Traction Law on this corridor whenever conditions warrant, generally September through May. It requires all wheel or four wheel drive with at least 3/16 inch of tread, or chains, with a 100 dollar fine for non compliance and 500 dollars if your vehicle helps close the road.
